Rest in Peace Little Allen

How sad that we rarely get to examine hummingbirds closely unless they've passed away.  While I wish this little one was still flitting about, it's exciting to see his feathers and markings (and little hummingbird feet!).  It's an Allen's Hummingbird, by the way and my client found him on her porch.  Poor little one.

I notice that I'm focusing on fauna more than flora lately, but then again I haven't been to the SF Garden Show yet, either!  If you haven't purchased your tickets, do so here.  I'll be at the California Native Plant Society table this Saturday from 5:30 to 8:00 spreading the native plant gospel so stop by if you happen to find yourself there!

  1. Oh, if he was in good shape (relatively speaking) and if there was a university nearby, they might want him for their life science collection (if they have one). Carcasses can be really valuable to researchers and students. I remember in my college days finding a rare prairie dog (roadkilled) and chucking it in the back of the van (with gloves on of course) and all the mammology professors were really excited when they heard about it because collecting endangered animals is often difficult to do.

  2. How sad. A handsome little fellow. I mostly see Anna's here. He's such a beautiful copper color.

On a brighter note, I'll see you at the SF show this weekend! I'm so excited. I wonder what we'll come home with? Taking my truck...just in case!

  3. What a beautiful bird! It's always sad to find a dead bird, seems to happen quite a bit in the spring...

  4. I just made a hummingbird post myself. Mine was still alive at least at the time I photographed it. I'm going to the SF Garden Show tomorrow. Have fun.

  5. What a great idea, Christine! I wonder if Berkeley is interested...
And I have to laugh at the idea of chucking prairie dogs around!
Hi Clare- the truck is probably a good idea, but I usually come home with my head crammed with new ideas. See you there!
TM- I wonder why that is... Perhaps because there's just more of them in Springtime?
Brad, your hummingbird post is way more full of life! Let us know what you think of the show.
