Field Trip: Maker Faire, San Mateo

 Doggie Diner Talismans

We took a sojourn to the Maker Faire in San Mateo over the weekend and found a few things to oogle.  It mostly consisted of a circus of circuit boards, metal fire sculptures, steampunk parades, LEDs and random bits of randomness.  It's inspiring.  I'm not quite sure how yet, but a good time was had by all.

This could be a nice bit of irreverence in a formal garden.  Mirrors in shady places can add some much-needed sparkle.

A band played on the front porch of this little cut-away house.  I love the loft and the fact that the "interior" is furnished.  For some reason, it reminds me of this hilarious Mickey Mouse cartoon.

These silver cups hung from the ceiling and undulated in patterns like a droplet hitting a glass of water.  Mesmerizing!

And of course, a fluorescent polyester-covered party-mobile offered rides.  A spectacle to observe the spectacle.

  1. Ah, sorry I missed it. I really wanted to come to the Dog Island Farm yogurt making demo. But alas, other duties called. Thanks for sharing photos!

  2. Ooooh...those silver hanging cups are very mesmerizing. We couldn't make it to the show...just too much going on around here. But at least we finished building the turkey pen :P Maybe next year. Thanks for sharing though, I was curious what sorts of things might be at the show.

  4. Wow, I wish I had known about the yogurt making demo, that would have been cool. I heard you can make it in your oven if you have a pilot light to keep it at the right temp.

Hi Clare, I don't blame you for missing out- you've got a few things keeping you busy right now!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one enamored with the cups- they hypnotized me! (btw- thanks, Maya! I feel I didn't quite capture the movement of the cups, but I'm pretty proud of the doggie diner one...)

  5. I'm sure you saw the rocketship, which several of my friends worked on. I love the doggies. I'm weirdly enamored of them.

Not to disrespect Dog Island Farm, but I think yogurt making is quite simple. My mom used to do it. My sister does it. Way less technical than making cheese.

  6. Lol, which rocketship? It seemed like there was so much going on! The dogs are certainly awesome and I feel a tidge of street cred having dined at the Doggie Diner across from SF zoo a few years back. (I'll take what I can get in terms of street cred!)
I'm excited to someday try the yogurt thing, then move into cheeses. So much to learn!

  7. man I wish I had known the maker faire was so much fun - I would have taken my dad, it's the kind of thing he'd love. Well thanks for the photos, now I'll know to go next time!

  9. Lisa & Robb, yogurt making can be quite simple but so many people have no idea you can make it at home. Plus there a thousand different variables in making it, it can take a long time to figure out the way that gives you the best results.

That said, I would never do the presentation again on a windy day with just a hot plate. I just couldn't get it up to temp and I couldn't get the "incubator" water warm enough or to keep temp either.
