It has shade most of the year from the fence, only direct sun now late afternoon and in the summer a big chunk of the day. It doesn't like that though. It seems to really like shade, water and room to spread. I wish I could offer growing tips. Plant a redwood grove? It really only grows here on the east side of our redwoods, or near the creek below another grove mixed with some overhanging Bay. No direct sun, at most a smattering of dappled morning sun, but nothing fierce.
